I have an asian-inspired apartment and am looking for cheap do-it-yourself ideas to spice it up.?
I have a red couch and a yellow loveseat and a big asian paper umbrella and some asian art on the walls, but I want to know some more cheap things I can do to spice it up and bring it all together.

- Purchase some bamboo plants and/or some bonsai plants. Wal Mart sells both of these, even though they are not the best. Have a small water fountain in one of the rooms. I forget the term for it, but combining water and plants brings a sort of peace to an area. One of those fountains that plug into the wall, just to offer the calming sound of running water, would do. Purchase some books for your coffee table. I love China, and Barnes & Noble currently has several for under $15. They are nice books with photographs from around the country. They probably have other Asian countries as well (though I have not specifically looked). Find a calendar with Asian scenes-that would be a very simple, easy way to bring a bit of Asia to the kitchen. Get some silk fabrics, or other fabrics in Asian prints (such as a flower motif) and cover some pillows for your couch and loveseat, and/or make some curtains. If you can find some larger square pillows, like the ones from an old couch, cover them in fabric and use them as seating around your coffee table. Some Asian items can be used for decor, even if they are not traditionally a decoration. Display a wok in the kitchen, an abacus near a globe in the living room, etc. How about a kimono and/or slippers displayed in the bathroom? How about some jade figurines? Get a goldfish. For some reason, they are associated with Asian gardens. I hope these ideas help. Have fun decorating! EDITED TO ADD: Look for inspiration at stores such as Pier 1 Imports and World Market. Visit a local China Town.
- Also Go to Marshalls or TJ max or homegoods, very great stuff, and cheap they have tons of oriental designed glass pieces and also geometric designs tend to help accent an asian inspired room.
